The only way to ever end these kind of tragedies from happening is to stop all import and sale 30+ year old vessel's to 3rd world countries. I know that sounds harsh when we all know they're just purchasing what they can afford. But it should start at the sellers end, no vessel should be allowed transfer of ownership without passing a full top to bottom inspection. The same as it would if it were 2 years old.
One other thought. If they replace undersized vessels with larger ships and they don't have the most stringent oversight of the vessels capacity verses tickets sold, they will only be risking more lives. Just because you make them buy larger ships doesn't mean they wont overload THOSE SHIPS for higher profit.
This is really drawn out. It didn't have to be almost an hour. They should have government oversight if the people are that poor and where the ship is unsafe and can't make a profit.
There are so many examples of people losing their lives in rich companies to the exact same circumstances. And there’s so many times when government with obvious solutions did nothing because they’re a bunch of bureaucrats
